What this site keeps about you
emno is a personal, non-commercial music collection. There are no accounts, no forms and no advertising. Below is exactly what does happen when you visit the site, in plain language.
Visitor statistics without cookies
The site counts for itself how many people visit and which pages, search terms and tracks are popular. To do that, after a page has loaded your browser sends a small message to the server with the page visited, the page title, the kind of device (phone, tablet or desktop) and, only on arrival, the site you came from.
No cookie is set and no IP address is stored. To tell visitors apart within a day, an encrypted code (hash) is made from your IP address and browser with a key that is randomly regenerated every day and discarded after two days. After that the code can no longer be linked to anything or anyone. The counts themselves are kept for two years.
Don't want to be counted? Open emno.nl/?notrack=1 once. Your browser remembers it and the footer will say "this browser is not counted". With ?notrack=0 you are counted again.
Cookies: only from Spotify, only with your consent
This site sets no cookies of its own and uses no Google Analytics or other third-party measurement. The only thing that sets cookies is Spotify's embedded player, which plays all the music. It is only loaded when you press a play button, and the first time the player asks whether that is okay. If you choose Do not allow, the player is not loaded and you open tracks in Spotify itself.
From the moment the player loads, your browser connects to Spotify, which sets its own cookies and sees your IP address. If you are signed in to Spotify, Spotify can link the playback to your account. See Spotify's privacy policy. Your choice is kept in your browser for a year and can always be changed with the Cookie settings button in the footer.
Images from other sources
Album covers and artist photos are loaded directly from the servers of Spotify, Discogs and YouTube (Google). Such a server therefore sees your IP address and browser, as with any image on the internet. Those parties set no cookies just because you look at a page.
Storage in your own browser
The site remembers a few settings in your browser, without a cookie and without sending them to the server: your cookie choice, whether you want to be counted and, during a visit, where you were on an overview page so you return to that spot.
Server log
Like every website, the hosting provider keeps a technical log with IP address, time, requested page and browser. It is needed to trace faults and abuse and is deleted automatically after a limited time. It is not used for statistics.
Your rights
Under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) you have the right to access, correct and delete personal data. Because this site stores almost nothing that can be traced to you, in practice there is little to access or delete. The one thing you control yourself is the permission for Spotify's player; you change it via Cookie settings in the footer. If you cannot resolve it, you can lodge a complaint with the Dutch Data Protection Authority, the Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens.
